The bright blue water of the Blue Lagoon beneath limestone cliffs on Nusa Ceningan

Blue Lagoon

Cliff jumping into electric-blue water

The Blue Lagoon is a small cove on the south-west coast of Nusa Ceningan, where white limestone cliffs drop into water of an almost unreal blue. From the clifftop, the colour shifts from turquoise over the sand to deep indigo where the ocean swell rolls in.

It is best known for cliff jumping: ledges of different heights have been used by jumpers for years, and nearby clifftop bars and platforms (such as the one at Mahana Point) let you leap into the sea and climb back up a ladder. Conditions change quickly — on a calm day it is exhilarating; with a swell running it is dangerous and you should only watch.

Top things to do at Blue Lagoon

Cliff jump — only when it is calm

Start at the lowest ledge, check the depth and the exit route first, and never jump alone or at low tide. If in doubt, don’t: several visitors have been seriously injured here.

Take in the view from the clifftop

Even without jumping, the colour of the water is worth the trip. Bars along the cliffs sell cold drinks with a view.

Snorkel the lagoon from a boat

On calm days, some snorkel trips stop at the Ceningan Wall and in the lagoon itself.

How to get to Blue Lagoon

  • From Lembongan: cross the Yellow Bridge by scooter or on foot, then about 2 km of steep, partly rough road — follow the signs.
  • On foot from the bridge: around 30 minutes, with some steep hills.
  • With a tour: some private buggy and scooter tours include Ceningan (buggies stop at the bridge).

Insider tips

  • Look at the water before anything else: waves breaking at the base of the cliff mean no jumping.
  • Jump feet first, arms in, and swim straight to the ladder or exit.
  • Wear reef shoes; the rocks are razor-sharp.
  • Ceningan’s roads are steep and potholed — take it slowly, or go with a driver.
