Crystal Bay

Penida’s palm-fringed bay and mola-mola dive site

Crystal Bay is a palm-fringed bay on Nusa Penida’s west coast, with a white-sand beach, a small temple island offshore and water that lives up to its name on a calm day. Many Lembongan snorkel boats stop here for its sheltered house reef, and it is a pleasant place to swim at the end of a Penida land tour.

Beyond the bay the reef drops steeply into deep water, and this is one of the best places in the world to dive with the oceanic sunfish, or mola mola. From roughly July to October, cold water upwells from the deep and the giant, strange-looking fish rise to be cleaned by reef fish — but the same upwelling brings cold thermoclines and powerful down-currents, so it is for experienced divers only.

Top things to do at Crystal Bay

Snorkel the bay

The shallow reef near the temple island has good coral and plenty of fish. Stay inside the bay: the current outside can be very strong.

Dive for mola mola

In season, early-morning dives give the best chance. Book with an experienced dive centre — there are several on Lembongan — or join a guided three-dive day.

Watch the sunset

Crystal Bay faces west; if you are staying on Penida, it is one of the island’s best sunset beaches.

How to get to Crystal Bay

  • From Lembongan: by boat on a snorkel or dive trip (around 20–30 minutes), or cross to Penida and drive about 30–45 minutes from Toyapakeh.
  • From Penida’s west-coast sights: about 30 minutes by road from Broken Beach.
  • With a tour: included on many west Penida land tours and snorkelling trips.

Insider tips

  • Mola mola dives are demanding: cold water (sometimes around 20 °C or lower), thermoclines and down-currents. Bring a thicker wetsuit and dive with a reputable operator.
  • Snorkellers should wear a life jacket and stay close to the boat.
  • There are small warungs on the beach, but bring cash.
  • The road on Penida is narrow and winding; allow plenty of time.

Crystal Bay FAQs

Frequently asked questions

When is mola mola season at Crystal Bay?

Roughly July to October, when cold upwellings bring the sunfish up to shallower cleaning stations. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Can beginners dive Crystal Bay?

The sheltered bay suits beginners on calm days, but the outer reef with the mola mola is for experienced divers because of currents and cold water.

Is Crystal Bay good for snorkelling?

Yes, inside the bay on a calm day. Stay away from the edges of the bay, where currents can be dangerous.
