Jungutbatu is Lembongan’s main village and the long beach in front of it, facing north-west across the Badung Strait to Bali. When surfers found the reef breaks offshore in the 1970s, this was where the first homestays opened, and it remains the island’s busiest stretch: guesthouses, dive shops, warungs and bars along a seafront path, with outrigger boats bobbing in the shallows.
On clear mornings, the view is dominated by Mount Agung, Bali’s highest and most sacred volcano, rising behind the sea. Offshore, the white lines of the surf breaks — Shipwrecks, Lacerations and Playgrounds — are a reminder of how the island first became famous.
Top things to do at Jungutbatu Beach
Surf the reef breaks
Shipwrecks, Lacerations and Playgrounds break over shallow reef, and are reached by a short boat ride. Playgrounds is the friendliest for improvers; the others are for experienced surfers. Beginners should take a surf lesson, timed to the tide.
Learn to dive
Several PADI and SSI dive centres are based on the beach, running courses and trips to Manta Point and Crystal Bay.
Climb to Panorama Point
Head up the hill behind the village for a panoramic view over Jungutbatu’s rooftops, the lagoon and Bali. Nearby is Puncak Sari, one of the island’s temples.

- Wear a T-shirt away from the beach — Jungutbatu is a working Balinese village.
